Andrew was out of bed for the first time. It was just sitting in a chair; one more small step. His eating is slowly improving. He needs a lot of calories in order to heal and so he will need some extra supplementation until he is able to progress to a more regular diet. Andrew gets exhausted pretty easily when we put him through the routine of moving, eating, lung exercises, oral care and more...so there are lots of naps. Andrew is slowly but steadily making a few steps forward today. It looks like he will stay in the ICU today as they move beds around.
Our nurse for the second day is a Vancouver Islander from the little town of You Bou...Lesley. She was here the day that we came in and it was nice to have a familiar voice to make one feel at home. Tonight we have Carlito and the parade of helpers in Andrew's recovery continues. It has been a whole week...the longest and shortest of our lives...and for many of our family and friends. The blog comments are so great and we look forward to them everyday.
I can't even imagine what you are going through as a family. Just know, that many, many people are reading and holding you close in their thoughts. Little by little and day by day. Thanks for posting.
ReplyDeleteI think about Andrew & your family daily. He's obviously your little miracle child! I hope you both are getting some sleep. Take care & thank you for your updates.
ReplyDeleteHi Steve and Marcia - I don't know you folks personally but I've been following Andrew's story on the news. I'm a Cal grad student, and I just feel the strangest connection with your family; my fiance's cousin went to Brentwood and we have family on Salt Spring Island. Anyhow, I would really love to be able to help you somehow, whether it's driving you from the hospital to the hotel so you don't have to take a cab, picking up some groceries, checking out library books - whatever is needed that would make your time here more comfortable and help you care for Andrew. Please, please contact me if there's anything I can do, even if it's a month from now, and know that your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

So happy you have your Mom and Dad by your side everyday. We are all sending you lots of positive prayers and thoughts....as it sounds like everyone is.

So glad that two countries' prayers are being answered. Know that we think of you every day. We are thrilled with Andrew's progress to date and expect that line to continue. If there is ANYTHING we can do, just ask. Hate that we are so far away, damn the heartland :) Thanks for blogging, we appreciate it and some day Andrew will want to read about his missing days.
